Band of the Week – The Dotted Eyes

November 11, 2012

So I do have some interests other than politics, and one of them is good music. I plan on posting about a lesser-known band I like once a week for others of you who enjoy finding new groups. I’m going to focus on groups that have never broken into the Billboard charts, because those that have are easy to find.

The first Band of the Week is The Dotted Eyes, an indie-pop band from Boston, MA. I first heard of them through Facebook because I went to high school with their female singer. What first caught my attention was the use of the ukulele on their track “More Than Pretend.” That song got me hooked enough to listen to the rest, and at this point I think my favorite is “Stay.” You can check out all their songs on their website.

My girlfriend’s comment while we were listening is that their male lead singer, Neil, sounds exactly like Ian Ball from Gomez. I was thinking more like the singer from Something Corporate / Jack’s Mannequin. Either way, he has a very smooth baritone that pairs well with the group’s more acoustic instrumental focus. Raquel, the group’s female lead, has a more distinctive, somewhat nasally tone, which complements Neil’s voice well on the duet tracks. Because of that complement, the duet tracks are much stronger than those featuring either singer alone.

Obviously, from the video above, they have some work to do to polish their on-camera presence, but that’s to be expected from a group with such little exposure. They do have two albums out, Threads and Wondering and Worrying. Both albums have a similar feel, but they must have gone with a higher-end recording for Wondering and Worrying, because the audio quality of that album is far superior to the first.

Overall, if you want a band that’s relaxing and easy to listen to with a distinctive sound, check out The Dotted Eyes.
